Because of the nature of boys, who love to be rough and to tumble around, many are now diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and put on medication. Boys must fit the culture—scrapping, jumping off jungle gyms, smacking one another—does not fit the culture. Brooks writes: “The education system has become culturally cohesive, rewarding and encouraging a certain sort of person: one who is nurturing, collaborative, disciplined, neat, studious, industrious, and ambitious. People who don’t fit this cultural ideal respond by disengaging and rebelling.” In many cases, it is the boys who do not fit!
